Verdict: The fit is amazing, no fear of showing the back crack, rich indigo color, super soft.

I read a recent interview with Bethenny Frankel, in which she stated that, she liked to 'edit her closet' in her spare time. Most people would roll their eyes at this, but it actually makes perfect sense to me. Women accumulate so much stuff over time...jeans here, a cardigan there, another pair of wedges to go with those....before you know it you've run out of hangers again and are cursing/rummaging through your closet for that old Rachel Pally cardigan that's lost in a sea of black cardigans. *breathe* I imagine this situation is only worse for someone in Bethenny's position, who is able to make countless frivolous purchases and is also gifted items on a daily basis.

My point (if you're still with me) is that I have come to love editing my closet. Every time I'm bored or have a few extra minutes, I'll stand in front of the closet and pull a few items that I want to evaluate. I'll try them on, lay out a few outfits with the pieces...and if I'm struggling to make them work...out they go. A few weeks ago, I pulled all of my cheapo Forever 21 skinny jeans and decided to toss them. I was never able to have a comfortable day in these. They would always fall down my hips, ending with baggy knees and a large drop crotch. I attribute this to the low low rise, cheap denim, and cuts for anyone other than women with child-bearing hips. The worst part? In my sad cast-off pile sat 6 pairs of $9-$11 skinny jeans...nearly $70 worth! Thankfully, I'd worn out the cost on all of them, so no love lost.

I've been reading about the Madewell High Riser jean for some time...almost always backordered on the website and universally flattering. Costing right around $100 with a coupon code, I decided these would be my investment skinnies. The verdict?

These are skinny and absolutely hug my legs, but have more heft than jeggings, while still being super soft. The waist is high (2 inches below my bellow button), but I love the extra material that holds in the tummy. As a sidenote, doesn't it seem true that our preferred pant rise is inversely proportional with our age? Ugh, there I've gone and embarrassed myself with nerdspeak. ANYWAY. Even with the high waist, there is no sign of mom jean butt. They stay put throughout the day, and never give me saggy knees. The inseam is a perfect-for-me 32'' that I can easily cuff in warmer weather.

As for the sizing, I chose my true size (right now a 27), but could probably have sized down to a 26 as they still have some give and will no doubt stretch with wear. Strangely, these are just about the only Madewell item I have that is tts...the sweaters seem to run small, while the tops and dresses seem a tad big (in no land am I currently a 0 dress size, I assure you). Back to the jeans...they fit well, the color is a perfect non-faded inky blue, and the price is right. Highly recommend!

review: Madewell Brownstone Bag

Back in January we re-did our annual budget and decided to cut back on things like eating out and shopping in an attempt to save money and start investing like grown-ups. Each month, I've got to stick to our budget allotment, which has really forced me to edit my shopping wishlist and separate the must-haves (new running sneakers) from the not-necessarys (another print blouse).

I mentioned on a past wishlist that I'd been hunting for a black purse...well Husband looked through this blog (sneaky!) and surprised me with the Marc Jacobs Classic Q Natasha purse for the holidays. I love it, and have been wearing it on the regular. The only time it doesn't work so well is for evenings out...the crossbody somehow doesn't complete my standard blouse/skinny jeans/boots look so well.

Enter the Madewell Brownstone Bag. It's been on sale via the website for months, and I bought it when Madewell was offering an additional % off sale items. I'm pleased with it so far! Now, it's no Chanel, but I love that it's a slightly dressier version of a purse I might carry everyday.

The good: The leather is buttery soft, and the construction seems really great. The bag can expand to a decent size, but doesn't appear to large. The chains are set up so that you can wear the bag crossbody or on the shoulder.

The not-so-good: The color is more of a soft black (not true black), which may bother some. Also, it's sometimes difficult to get the chains to sit just right...hard to describe but they almost never lay perfectly right (you can see a kink in the second pic below).

For the price I paid (around $70 - nearly a 50% reduction from the retail price of $158), I think this bag is well worth it. I've already got my fancy party clutches and mini designer bags for events and dressy nights out - this one fits the bill as a slightly dressier purse for dinner dates and casual drinks (which, let's face it, comprises the majority of my limited social calendar). Madewell also has a suede version and this amazing (albeit expensive) pony hair version.

latest list: things I'm loving

Happy Friday! I know everyone is freaking out about Christmas being upon us, but I'm sort of meh about the holidays. Don't get me wrong, I love walking through the decorated streets and seeing gorgeous trees in brownstone windows, but I feel like the holidays are a big marketing ploy these days. And then NYE comes, which is always so anti-climatic. Then we have to hunker down for the next 3 months until warmer weather (and vacation days) finally comes. Ok, enough with my old-person cynicism! On to my latest loves:

Essie Forever Young polish

I've finally found the perfect red for my skin tone - Essie Forever Young - from the 2008 collection. Big Spender, one of my favorite summer colors (an almost-neon purpley pink), is part of the same collection, so I'm not surprised that I love Forever Young. It doesn't have too much orange or blue...it's really a true red. The formula is highly pigmented as well...I could have gotten by with just one coat (rare when I use deep colors), but did 2 lighter coats along with Essie's 3-Way Glaze (more on that below).

Can be used as a basecoat, topcoat, and nail hardener. I use it as a base- and top-coat. It takes a while for nails to dry when I do this, but I seriously do not get chips for at least a week (I also keep my nails super short to avoid chips). It's really glossy as well.

Free Sudoku on the Droid

What I love about this game (aside from the fact that it's a FREE app), is that you can choose from a number of levels to play at. The easy level is great for the morning commute, since I can finish the game by the time I reach my stop on the subway. It times each game as well, so you can compete against yourself. Winning the game each morning and trying to beat my time is a great way to start the day on a good note.

Nordstrom Cashmere-lined leather gloves (on sale for $59.90)

The one thing about Brooklyn in the winter, I've learned, is that it gets crazy windy. Especially right around our apartment, which is a block from the water. My old trusty J Crew wool gloves did nothing to protect my hands from the wind. After a bit of research, I bought these gloves from Nordstrom. They're pretty reasonably priced for a great quality pair of gloves, and the reviews are fantastic. They are super warm as well!

Angry Birds

If there is one other game you need in your life, it's Angry Birds. I realize I'm a bit behind on this craze, but I totally get it. The birds...they're angry. These nasty pigs stole their stuff, and they want it back. The pigs are all like 'come and get us b*tches!' and hide in these elaborate fort things. And the crazy birds use kamikaze tactics to bust 'em down. The sound effects are hilarious, and it's just a feel-good kind of game. It's $0.99 on the iPhone but FREE on Android phones.

Uniqlo

I usually make it a point to avoid this place around the holidays because of the constant throngs of tourists, but recently made an exception to pick up some basics. I love this place! The prices are fab and the quality is pretty great. I am loving my 2 new pairs of the Skinny Straight jean (a great year-round style), and Jeggings (they call them Legging Pants) that are perfectly stretchy and pigmented with a mid-rise, smooth waistband, and all the details of an actual jean (all for a solid $19.90). They're currently giving them away on sale for $9.90 (the Skinny Straights). Oh and Uniqlo does FREE hemming. They also vanity-size like crazy, which is such a mood booster. I'm also obsessed with the Heat Tech products - my savior in this cold snap (especially the tops and socks). If you're in the market for a great stand-in for the classic Patagonia fleece jacket, they have them for men and women, for around $20. New Yorkers - run....Out-of-Towners - make this your first stop on your next visit.

review: Paige Denim Jimmy 2 Jean Shorts

Review: Perfect fit and great not-too-short length. Good quality denim. Run big.

I've been wearing a pair of $11 Forever 21 denim shorts for most of the summer. They were originally cuffed and had a 3'' inseam. I decided long before turning 30 that any shorts I donned must have at least a 5'' inseam. I also have abnormally long legs for a short person, so 3-inchers tend to look a little obscene on me. Anyway, it took all of 10 minutes to undo the hem and I had a pair of cut-off denim shorts that were the perfect length. One small problem. The stretchy denim-like material would not let go of the crease from the cuff. No matter how much heat or steam or pressure I applied, the crease remained...and the cuff inevitably returns with every wear.

When Shopbop had one of their recent (and super rare) 20% off sale items discount, I jumped on these Paige denim shorts. I ordered a 27 (my usual size these days) and a 28 (Paige has almost always run small on me, plus Shopbop's free return policy makes ordering extra sizes an easy decision). It was love at first sight. The fading is pretty perfect and the fraying is set with a row of stitching. The color is just what I've been looking for - a darker blue that isn't too deep. The best part, aside from the length, color, feel and fit? The vanity sizing! Perhaps because they are a 'boyfriend,' relaxed fit, but these run AT LEAST a full size big. I could have easily fit into a 26 (possibly even a 25), but the 27 gave the fit I was looking for. With plenty of summer left (and suffering through what feels like a month-long heatwave), I will get plenty of use from these shorts!

review: H&M garden collection

I've mentioned before that I am loving floaty, floral, watercolor-esque type clothing lately. A floaty top with skinny jeans and a cardigan or leather jacket has become my go-to outfit formula lately. So, when I saw that H&M was releasing a "garden collection" full of floaty, bohemian pieces, I knew I wanted to check it out.

According to the website, the collection is made from "environmentally adapted materials recycled polyester, organic cotton and organic linen." Prices top out at about $60 for the more coveted pieces (jackets and the rose blazer), but most fall within the $20-$30 range. You would imagine the pieces to be soft, airy, textured, etc. My verdict? SOME are, MOST are not, and I found much of it to be pretty unflattering on me.

My closest H&M is notorious for slow cashier lines and congested and sauna-like fitting rooms. I just grabbed whatever I could find in my size and waited in line. When I finally tried everything on at home, I was a little unsure. The sizing runs a bit big, and while exaggerated batwing sleeves look fab on a thin, tall model...they seemed to overwhelm me. Same with the double-layered ruffles on the tops and dresses. I took a 4 in everything, and probably could have managed with a 2, save for the top and dress that have the babydoll-tie-top.



I don't know if it's because I am curvy yet small-boned and petite, but the 3rd top shown just overwhelmed me. The 1st top was cute but I didn't dig the elastic at the sleeves. The 2nd was also cute, but I doubted whether I could pull off huge bohemian sleeves. I'm still considering the last dress, but I feel like I might wear it once and forget it. Truth be told - I was on the fence about all of them. I mean everyone is raving about this collection...was I crazy? Then I tried everything on for Husband and he was very 'meh if that's what's in style now and you like it, you should keep it.' Coming from someone who rarely, if ever has commentary on my fashion choices aside from 'I love that on you' and 'no you are not and do not look fat,' this meant a lot to me. He didn't like a single piece, reinforcing my gut feelings.

The polyester items are unlined, and all of the ones I had purchased had some loose threads. I doubt the items would fall apart on me if I were to keep them, but still annoying. I will say, when I looked at the organic cotton items - they all felt soft and light. Coming in white and soft, pastel colors, they seemed like great pieces to pair with basics like khaki shorts. I didn't grab any of these, since I was shopping with tunnel vision for prints. But, they were available in plenty of sizes. I also saw a girl wearing the coveted red rose blazer, with some faded grey skinnies and a white tee. She was also super tall and model-thin. Of course, it looked great on her!

And I think that's the lesson here. Sure this stuff may have looked ok on me, but it wasn't flattering. Doesn't mean it won't look super cute on anyone else. I'd rather take the $20-$25 each piece cost, and put it towards one of the nicer pieces on my wishlist. Now, if that Ali Ro dress would only go on sale...

review: old navy spring/summer

Old Navy has really been surprising me lately - picking up the slack of its more expensive siblings (Banana Republic and the Gap). I'm finding the quality and style has really improved, and the sales are not to be missed. I bought a few things recently and have to rave...

Ruffled One-Piece Swimsuit in black ($29.50, currently on sale for $19)

I've written about my interest in finding a cute one-piece, and this one fit the bill. Ignore the reviews that say it doesn't work for larger chests. This absolutely fit me well and held everything in place. The bust features removable padding...when taken out it made a world of difference. I sized up one for a more comfortable fit up top.

Burnished wedges in brown ($29.50)

I have always had luck with Old Navy shoes. They are moderately comfortable, especially for the price. Strangely, Gap and BR shoes KILL my feet. These wedges are much more adorable irl. I wouldn't advise wearing them if you'll be on your feet all day, but for a few hours, they are definitely a comfortable and stylish choice. The faux leather doesn't look faux, and the detailing makes them look more $$$ than they really are. Fit is tts.

Slub-knit scoopneck tee ($16.50 on sale for $12 in white)

This was a last-minute purchase but I love it for casual, lazy days. The slub-knit adds some texture, and I like the look of the reinforced neckline. I bought it in white, and the material is thick enough to not be see-through. Buyer beware - this top runs huge. I took an XS, which had room to spare. It's long enough so I can wear it with leggings and a cardigan and not feel overexposed.

Khaki Shorts 5'' inseam ($19.50)

Yes, I've embraced shorts again after a 10-year hiatus. I'm only partly kidding. I just went through a phase (since high school lol) where I did not want to wear shorts...unless they were 1) for the gym or 2) bermudas. Lately though, I've been loving the look of mid-thigh shorts with billowy tops or even tees and cropped jackets. I thought a black pair might be perfect to test out, for dressing up or down. What I love about these is the 5'' inseam - not too long, not too short. 3'' is just a little too short for this geezer.


Everyone should drop into Old Navy if they get a chance this spring/summer. I spotted cardigans and tees in a million colors, adorable floaty maxi dresses in muted floral prints, gladiator- and thong-style sandals, and tons of great workout gear (also bought a few long-sleeve running tees that have thumbholes for $11)!

review: lululemon gear

So I finally caved and got myself some Lululemon gear (pronounded Lulu-lemon like the fruit). For years, I've gotten by with cheap yoga pants from Old Navy, and even some more expensive Hardtail foldover pants. Tops included white men's Hanes tees, ribbed tanks, and old college tees. Over time, the tees and tanks got dingy, and the pants started getting small holes along the seams (mostly in the crotch area - how embarrassing!)

I've read a ton about the Lululemon products and brand, and have seen plenty of the pieces in action since more than half of the gym-goers in any given class are outfitted in some Lululemon. People claim the pieces wash and wear well and last for years. Even the salesgirl, while ringing me up, cheerfully proclaimed 'welcome to the addiction.' There were a few reasons I was hesitant to buy Lululemon in the past, mainly the prices. Cropped pants start at $60, while the famous Groove pants start at $98. Tanks start at $40, but can run up to $60. The items rarely go on sale - the website's loot section is usually picked over quickly and limited in sizing, and in-store price reductions vary by store, season, and even color of the product.

My change of heart came when Husband finally convinced me to just invest in some good-quality workout wear. Pieces that looked good, made me feel confident at the gym, and which were made to last. So, I ordered a few tops off of the Lululemon loot section, and visited the store to try on some pants. Here are the items I bought, and my thoughts.

Shade Tank

I studied the size chart, busted out my tape measure, and decided I'd be a 6 or 8 in Lululemon tops (for reference, I'm typically a 2/4). Took a chance on the final sale items, and purchased black, green, and a striped version. Big mistake. The black and green, both size 8, were falling off me (consequently they're up on ebay now: here and here). Even the 6 was big, but doable since I typically double up my sports bras for added support. I wore the 6 for cardio, and I always feel rather hot in it. Hot like my-skin-can't-breathe-and-I-might-melt-into-a-puddle hot. I later found out that this top is made of luon (Lululemon's signature material), and is designed to wick moisture away from the skin. In order for the fabric to efficiently do so, the garment needs to be fitted against the skin. Because my top is a touch big, the sweat just sits there and can't be wicked away. Good to know and dammit! If I actually lose some weight, I'll probably have to sell this one too. The Shade Tank has a secret pocket inside at the back, which is cool, but not super useful for me. I did use it to store my lock combo, but doubt I'd use it for keys and cash. Still, a nice feature to have.

Movement Tank

This was another loot purchase. Strangely, I bought this in a size 6 (the failed 8 is up on ebay too), and it fits ok. A size down would have fit better in the straps, but this hugs nicely without being too constricting in the tummy. Again, since I double up sports bras, the looseness up top wasn't much of an issue. What I LOVE about this one is the longer length. It is perfect to wear with running tights or cropped leggings, since it covers the tush nicely. The extra length also allows you to bunch up the fabric a bit around the middle, for added coverage. The fabric at the chest keeps the top from feeling too low cut. The Movement Tank is made of light luon, and it felt a lot more comfortable through heavy cardio sessions.

Groove Pants

I bought all of the bottoms in-store, since I wanted to make sure and get it right the first time. They are all made of regular-weight luon, and I took a size 4 in all 3 bottoms (I'm a size 26/27 in pants). I have to say, the hype about these are spot-on, They lift the rear, tighten the legs, and look amazing. The rise is a mid-rise, which I prefer for working out. IMO, these might be the best bootcut workout pants around. For reals. Online review claim that the quality of these is different from the Grooves of years past, so I'll have to update in a few weeks after repeated washings. I hope that's not the case!

Wunder Unders

I loved these so much, that I bought the full-leg version and the cropped version. Like the Groove pants, the Wunder Unders have this magic ability to slim your legs and flatter completely. The crops hit at the bottom of my calf, and the full leg version have a tiny bit of bunching at the ankle. Lululemon offers free hemming for anything (you can bring them in months after purchase and this will still apply), so if I can shorten them at anytime. These leggings are really great quality...I'm tempted to wear them out an about as well as to the gym!

Lululemon markets most of their items for yoga, although they can clearly be used for any activity (even casual wear). I'm intrigued by their running selection, especially the I Just Wanna Run tank and the Empower Crop Pants.

Some Takeaway Lessons:
* Don't be afraid of the 'educators' who work in the store. I'm usually a silent, on-my-own, leave-me-alone kind of shopper, but the girls who worked at my closest location were very knowledgeable and honest. They took one look at me, and picked my exact size in the bottoms.
*Luon products, when sized right, give you great shape, hold you in all the right places, and wick sweat away efficiently.
* The bottoms, when sized right, should be snug, but never appear shiny when you stretch. Shiny indicates they are too tight.
* You can hem for free just about anything - pants to make shorts, tunic tanks to become regular tanks. It's a nice option, especially with the cost of the items.

My advice is to visit your local store and try stuff on. I am crossing my fingers that my items hold up for the long haul. They appear to be great quality and make me look great, which is 2/3 of what I was looking for in workout wear! I apologize that some of the items I listed aren't available online. The Lululemon website leaves a lot to be desired, but I think if you call Customer Service, the inventory is more extensive than what appears online. Also, they seem to phase out their seasonal items rather quickly, so pieces come and go or are reborn in different colors and designs, all the time.

Spotted this while returning the Washed Leather Racer jacket (review to come). I immediately barreled my way over to the rack, oohing and aahing over the details. Jersey soft material! Perfect heather grey! Adorable surprise of striped cuffs! This is one I just might pay retail for!

recent faves and raves

I've had some good shopping luck for the last few months. Believe me, with all of these post-holiday sales, it's been tough to have any sort of discipline or self-control! But I stuck to my wishlist, patiently waited for sales and codes, and came out with a few items that I absolutely adore.

Steve Madden Veronna boots (Sold out on the SM site)

I'd been pining for the Frye Veronica Slouch boots for over a year now. Sadly, every time I found a sale, they sold out super quickly. I spotted the SM Veronna boots and knew I'd found a great stand-in (they were also featured by Jen at TheLook4Less). I'm so impressed with the quality and color (a perfect worn-but-still-dark brown), and the leather is not stiff like Fryes can be (even after a few years of wear, my old Campus boots never really softened up). The sole is not as luggy as the Fryes, and the fit is definitely closer to the leg (I often have trouble with boots being too wide). I found them on sale, and with an additional 30% off and free shipping, they were a fab deal! I live in them now!

Sir Alistair Rai Sammi scarf

I LOVE Sir Alistair Rai scarves. The fabric is a soft soft cotton and they are so unique. I love the larger size of them...perfect for travel to use as a blanket or shawl, and the perfect weight for year-round wear. The Sammi scarf has a bold and bright print...I spotted it on one of the online sample sale sites, and it sold out nearly instantly. Finally found, on sale, and with an additional discount code, this pretty thing was finally mine.

Calypso Christiane Celle Pazzi dress

I saw this on so many girls in the city last summer, styled in about a hundred different ways. Belted, dressed up, dressed down, with jackets and cardis...the simple shape is flattering (yet perfect for a big brunch or dinner), and the signature Calypso silk is THE best material to take on a beach vaca. Even after it went on sale, I didn't bite, trying to convince myself that I had enough summer dresses. Been kicking myself ever since! After the New Year, my ridiculously low best offer on ebay was accepted on a never-worn coral Pazzi. It is gorgeous! I think I need it in navy and black as well. Hopefully Calypso comes back with it next summer...def not making the same mistake twice!

Lauren Merkin Large Plum

This has been on and off my wishlist for YEARS. Not even kidding. Years! So many cheap stand-ins that fell apart and didn't fit the bill. No longer. Found on sale and for an additional 50% off! The size is huge...I recently stuffed it with purse things, papers, and a mag for a day trip and it was great. The color is divine. A dark rusty brown with a reptile pattern, which is actually a really cool feature that I love! LM's purses are such great quality. I have 2 other clutches and the leather is so buttery soft. Worth every penny, but even better on sale!

Urban Outfitters Silence & Noise Intarsia Sweater

I have Amber at Amber'sNotebook to thank (or blame - ha!) for this one. Spotted on her blog and worn effortlessly and stylishly....I was smitten from the get-go. Of course, once I decided I had to have it, every store in the country was sold out! I visited at least 6 different stores, in 2 different states. Poor husband had to endure my quest, as I described the sweater as best I could to clueless sales associates. It finally popped back up online in limited sizes and I pounced. So what if it's a size too big? I just wear it with leggings, tall boots, and belt it to get the proportions right.

Cole Haan Air Dana Ballet Flats

I've never really liked Cole Haan shoes - they always struck me as overpriced, a little matronly, and uncomfortable to boot (no pun intended - bwaha!) I saw these at Lord & Taylor before realizing the brand. Even more surprised when I tried them on. So cute, and so so comfy. I guess because of the Air Nike technology? I must have had my head in the sand, because I did not know about this union. Anyway, I could seriously walk for hours and hours in these. Most ballet flats hurt my feet and ankles after a while...not enough support for my high arches. But these are definitely different. The color is neutral enough to go with anything, and the pattern adds interest (plus a few scuffs would hardly be noticeable). Purchased at Lord & Taylor on sale and with a wedding giftcard (we cannot seem to get rid of these!)

f21 finds

My mom is a doctor, and has worked on Thanksgiving for as long as I can remember (allowing her to take the entire Christmas/New Year period off). For this reason, we always do our big stuff-yer-face bonanza on Friday. Before I got married, it was always just the 4 of us (including my brother)...this year Brother couldn't make it, and Husband was here. Point being - we never dress up or get fancy...I've always rolled up to the table in sweats with a nice big elastic waist. As you can see, I'm not one of those people who approaches a Thanksgiving meal with dietary caution...it's one day that doesn't set me up for failure and weight gain throughout the holiday season (I throw that in because all of the food- and health-related blogs were so focused on portions and eating smart, etc. etc...and I just like to enjoy the day and hop back on my healthy track the next day...you only live once.)

Anyway, I realized I typed all that out as a segway into urging you to buy this gorgeous F21 blouse that is flowy and loose and might have worked perfectly for a Thanksgiving meal were it not silk. Oops. Sorry. Regardless, this top could probably get you through a number of upcoming holiday fetes...though you may want to bring a Tide pen along if finger foods will be involved.


The color is a deep purple and as most things from the Love21 line, fits on the big side. No matter...I already want to layer this under everything from a shrunken tweed blazer to a boyfriend cardigan and lightweight scarf. Hooray!

I also managed to score on a pair of $9.50 skinny jeans, which PS - has just been reduced to $6. Six bones for jeans? You can't even get leggings for that much (okay you can at F21 but those are no better than semi-opaque tights). Fit is tts to slightly big. I'm about to order 3 more pairs...


Finally, I'm eyeing this cute little cargo-type jacket. Last week, while leaving the gym, I followed this girl out, who was wearing capri leggings and a khaki-colored anorak-type jacket with adorable pleating at the back. Sadly, I only saw her from the back, but couldn't stop thinking about how surprisingly flattering that back detail was. When I spotted this find at F21, I thought it was a good representation...

PPS - I don't think I ever posted this find, which I received about a month ago. So adorable and actually perfect for fall. I wore it layered with tights, boots, and a long sweater, although I think it would look so cute with a thin turtleneck underneath. Fits tts to slightly small...I sized up for some extra length. Comes in navy and eggplant...I bought the navy!

review: Anthropologie Bull's Eye Dress

This was on my fall wishlist not too long ago. My size sold out online, so I trekked to my nearest Anthro to snag the dress....alas, it was sold out at the store! Of course, this sent me into a frenzy, fearing that I'd never even be able to try on the darn thing. I filled out a form with the SA, and she promised to track down my size and call me to do a free charge send.

I waited 3 whole days. No call. Did they forget about my inquiry? Who knows, but how annoying, right? I emailed CS and received a response within 12 hours, listing every store in the country that still had the dress in my size. All 7 of them. Oy! I finally managed to get through to an Anthro in NJ to do a charge-send for 2 different sizes. Just to make sure.

I'm usually a 2/4 in dresses. On a good day, I can squeeze into a 0, but 2 gives a good, close fit and 4 gives me and the girls some breathing room. I kept the size 4 in this dress. It offered slightly more room in the bust, and more length. Truth be told, I'm usually hesitant about ruffles that are on or around any part of the bust, but these are quite flattering.

This dress is a soft silk...a review on the website claims it's also machine-washable (on delicate cycle in cold water I'm sure). It falls beautifully and doesn't linger over any lumps and bumps. That being said, it is silk and unlined. I'd highly recommend investing in a slip (someday I will wax philosophical on why every adult woman should own at least 4 slips) to keep this nice and flowy and not clingy. The waist is elastic, but is actually set at the smallest part of the waist (unlike F21's elastic waists). The removable belt is actually pretty substantial, and also has a buckle (the super thin belt loops, though, annoy me every time...they always break!). I have to say, though, that the dress looks A-MAZING with the snakebite belt. I tried it on for Hubs and when I swapped the belts out, he said '"wow, yes keep it!" Also nice are functional buttons down half of the dress and ties at the neck.

I love the dress, but am still a little meh about paying full price. However, it truly is a season-less piece that is well-made and pretty classic. The design is bolder in person then it appears on the site, which I happen to love. I'm planning to wear the dress this weekend with some sliver wedge tall brown boots and a long oatmeal-colored cabled cardigan...hopefully we'll get a nice, sunny fall day!

11/11 Update: Lily on How I Met Your Mother was wearing this dress in Monday's episode. I've noticed they put her in a ton of Anthro stuff, all of which is super flattering! She paired it with a brown leather belt at her natural waist. Loves it!

Diet & Exercise

Update from 6/30/09: So we stopped the Apple Cider Vinegar thing...largely because even after choking down the diluted ACV we saw no changes whatsoever. I also did more research and found some pretty decent evidence that the effects of an ACV diet are negligible to harmful. I still have a little left, and it's actually kind of yummy in apple juice (tastes like a tart apple), but will definitely not purchase a bottle again.

Update from 7/20/09: On the other hand, our Green Monster routine stuck. We love them! Our base is always spinach, frozen bananas, and milk. We also usually add chia seeds. As for supplements, we've swapped out the protein powder (reviews to come) for Amazing Grass' Amazing Meal. We've tried various frozen fruit additions (Whole Foods has a good selection of frozen fruit), and decided that strawberries are def the way to go.

To ensure Husband gets enough protein to keep him satisfied until lunch, I've started making protein pancakes! They are so easy to make. For one pancake I start by mixing egg white from one large egg and 1/4 cup oatmeal. The next 1/4 cup can be any number of things...I've used pumpkin puree, mashed banana, applesauce, and a mix of carob chips and nuts. Finish it off with 1 scoop of your chosen protein powder. Mix well, drop onto a frying pan (on medium-high heat) with about 2 T hot olive oil, and cook for maybe 3 minutes on each side.

Update from 7/30/09: Good news and bad news on the workout front. I gave up kettlebells. I truly did love the twice-weekly workouts. But, my amazing instructor left and they canceled one of the classes. I was also developing some knee and back pain...the combination of high impact moves with occasional running was doing a number on me. I thought this was a great opportunity to branch out and try some new classes. And...I'm now obsessed with spinning! Something I NEVER thought I could get into (after one sad attempt at 30 minutes on a stationary bike followed by a week's worth of sore quads). I'm even looking at special cycling shoes! Stay tuned...

Beauty

Update from 8/26/09: As much as I loved the Aveeno Hair Minimizing lotion, it just doesn't stand up to the central heating in my apartment building. I'd forgotten how incredibly dry, flaky and itchy my skin gets when the outside temp drops. Going back to my tried and true Vaseline Intensive Care Cocoa Butter lotion until next spring/summer.

Update from 10/9/09: Again, another beauty product bites the dust come winter. The Boscia eye treatment is wonderful, but it just doesn't provide enough moisture for my skin right now. I wake up to flaky and super dry skin, and that red, raw look has slowly returned. The hunt for an eye cream continues...hearing good things about Origins so that may be my next try.

Fashion

Update from 10/10/09: So many updates here! Well first, I decided against getting a cape. I checked the Anthro one out, and it was actually a greenish taupe color (not the oatmeal I saw on the website). Also, I decided it just wasn't practical for me. I get cold, I need sleeves. Incomplete arm coverage will only do it for me when it's maybe 55-60 degrees. Any warmer, I grab a hoodie or light sweater...any cooler, I need a real coat. The good news is that I picked up a great leather jacket (love it even more than the Vince one pictured)...it's the perfect transition piece and I've already worked it into so many outfits.

I did manage to locate the Anthro Bull's Eye dress, which sold out in my size online...and no thanks AT ALL to the sales associates at the 16th and 5th Ave location (filled out my info for a charge send and they forgot all about it...never heard from them again, UGH). Will def post a review once it arrives!

Finally, I'm totally SOL with regard to the JCrew chambray shirt (sold out online and seemingly in every store), so I can only hope it'll show up at a factory outlet someday. Ditto with the green Anthro purse. It went on sale, was still too much for me, and it disappeared online and in-store. *shrugs* I guess they weren't meant to be.

Finally, the Anthro Cross Your T strappy shoes! They sold out quickly on the website. But thanks to Kim over at Anthroholic, I found out that they are not exclusive to Anthro! I'm watching out for a coupon code or sale on the Seychelles Vaudeville heels!

Dog/Pet

Update from 6/30/09: Our fur baby is almost 9 months old now! And quite the traveled citygoer. He's been on the subway, in various cars, and even on a flight to Miami with us! In each case, he has been a calm little guy - mostly sleeping or being curious. On the subway, we always carry him in a bag and no one seems to care or pay attention. This makes the original linked story pretty curious for me. Maybe her pug was in an open-top bag? And maybe she just got super upset about it and was belligerent with the police? If it were me, I would have exited at the next stop, tended to my pup, and hailed a cab. Well actually, I would have taken a cab to begin with. Anyway, it's the last time I comment on a random story with incomplete facts!

Update from 8/31/09: We finally got Griff some pet insurance - settling on Trupanion. I think we pay around a $40 premium per month with no deductible. Since then, we've had 2 medical issues with him, so thank goodness we finally settled on a package. Will update once we complete the claims.

great shopping day...on foot!

Despite living in NYC, where mall brands and designers share walls and both are easily accessible to me, I find myself doing the bulk of our retail shopping online. The deals are better (especially with discount codes and online-only sales), and it's just easier then schlepping around town. Today, I set out to find pieces for our Halloween costume, a few workout items I'm needing, and a dress from Anthro that is now sold out in my size online.

My closest Anthro didn't have the dress in stock, but located my size at several other stores. The dress should be arriving within a week, via free shipping. The transaction was easy peasy, and the SA, super sweet. Yes, I did buy the dress full-price. But, it's come into my head for various potential outfits, and has been on the wishlist for over a month now. And it has yet to go on sale. So it goes, unfort...

While standing in the abnormally long early afternoon checkout line, I spotted the elusive Snakebite belt in brown. It looked like a return, and I snatched it up. It really is the perfect belt for cinching just about anything around your waist.
My Anthro never actually carried this belt, so to find one as a return was lucky. (Speaking of lucky, Roxy is running a great contest for Anthro-lovers. Run, don't walk, over to her site and enter!)

I then headed over to Old Navy, where I came away with 2 items. A pair of leggings with a foldover waist and super-flattering ruching along the hips (I needed leggings NOW for my spin classes...more on that later...), and a racerback 'moisture-wicking' tank for...get ready for it...$2.24!?! Marked down to $4.99 from $10, it showed up as $2.24 at checkout. Say whaaaaat? I love when that happens!!! The tank itself runs big, but is soft and lightweight. They appear to be on sale on the website, but I'm guessing you too can get a great deal in-store.
Finally ended up at Sports Authority (I braved the god-awful costumer service because I needed to augment my Halloween costume...more on that later). They were running 20% off certain Nike items, and snagged some plain racerback tanks.
The tanks had mesh panels in the chest and back, had a thin built-in bra, and fit surprisingly well. I usually double up my sports bras, but I don't need to with this top. Highly recommend!

Sometimes you just need to set out on foot to fulfill your shopping errands. There really is no substitute for touching the fabric, trying things on, and feeling that thrill that comes with a great deal.

review: Target suede (Ugg-look-alike) boots

Review: Nearly identical to UGGs. Comfortable. Run true to size, but if planning to wear barefoot, size down 1/2 size.

Once upon a time, I refused to put a pair of UGGs on my feet. You were supposed to wear it barefoot, and it made feet look super wide...it was a trend I could do without. Five years later, it seems that UGGs:winter::Havaianas:summer (my goodness, how dorky is that?) I bought myself a tall and short pair, and lived in them on casual days. As with any trend, high demand puts pressure on a company's ability to produce...UGG manufacturing was soon outsourced to China (I believe the Ultras are still made in New Zealand, though), and in my humble opinion, the quality took a nosedive. The once plus sheepskin interior felt rougher, and I heard stories of boots falling apart after just a season or two of wear. $150-$200 suddenly didn't seem worth it.

UGG look-alikes have been around nearly as long as UGGs themselves. The Target (Xhilaration brand) boots are possibly the spawn I have ever seen. Long story short, I needed a pair of easy on/off boots to wear to Pilates classes and for short puppy potty trips outside. I didn't want to worry about weatherproofing or dye rub-off from my pants. If they got nasty, I could toss them come spring. These fit the bill.

I dare you to find a substantial difference between UGGs (left) and the Target version (right)!

These are as comfortable as UGGs. I wouldn't wear either for long walks around the neighborhood, given the lack of substantial support. The interiors are mildly soft and cushy (may irritate those sensitive to synthetic materials). But they're perfect if you're on the go, or for a casual day.

To further convince you, I sat with both in hand and did a close side-by-side comparison. Both have a suede exterior, 'faux fur' interior, and rubber sole. Both have similar stitching and seaming. Both seem to run about a 1/2 size big, and only come in whole sizes. The Target sole is slightly thicker, with a slight texture, as compared to the UGG sole. The Target boot is also slightly heavier than the UGGs. Would you be able to spot or feel these diffs while wearing? Probably not. Saving you at least $125.

*Update: Just realized today that the UGG boots are slightly cushier on interior portion of the toebed (the part that cushions the top part of the foot. I suspect this would be replicated in the Target version by getting a size that fits perfectly without socks.

One of my wishlist items was a new leather jacket. You may recall that I vowed to first see if I could rework leather jackets hanging in a closet at my parents' house. Well, once I looked into the price of making such changes to leather garments, I quickly decided that a new mid-range leather coat would be a better investment.

We've also officially entered fall here in NYC. Chilly-ish temps with some warmer, sunny days...wool is still too much, but thin blazers won't really cut it. A friend raved to me about the Aqua brand leather coats over at Bloomingdale's, saying that for the price, they were a good 'in-between seasons' option. Decent leather at under $300? I had to see for myself. The recent 20% Friends & Family discount made it even more worth the trip.

I wasn't too familiar with Aqua...it's Bloomies' in-house brand that falls within the Contemporary department. But what a nice surprise the leather jackets turned out to be! The leather is quite soft, yet thick. There are some nice details, such as seaming, pockets, etc etc. I saw one option with a removable hood (see below) that could be a close stand-in for Mike & Chris, yet without the $700+ pricepoint. The quality was as good or better. Sure, you could find decent leather at well under $300. But not in the form of super stylish bombers and motorcycle styles!

I settled on the motorcycle coat with the faux fur removable collar. I like the pocket details on the front, the seaming is quite flattering at the back, and the detachable collar gives some flexibility. As far as fit, I sized up from my usual size, which fit, but was a fairly tight squeeze (I had to inhale deeply to even zip it thoroughly over my chest). The sales associate informed me that Aqua is geared towards shoppers who desire a more youthful (read: more fitted) look. She recommended that I size up, but noted that the 'young people like you' are taking it tighter (to which I nearly hugged her as I laughingly informed her I was 8 months away from 30).

Rachel Zoe insists that you should buy leather jackets 'very fitted,' since they stretch with wear. However, I didn't really want to take a chance with this one...I wanted to wear it now with thin sweaters and scarves! If you prefer a fitted look, or don't plan to zip it much...I say take your true size. If you plan to wear sweaters (even thin ones) underneath, size up. The price is right for these, and I know I'll be wearing it for years to come.

Beware that they are selling out quite fast online and in-store. The jacket I purchased is available in black only in limited sizes. Possibly the nicest and most helpful high-end department store (is Bloomies still considered high-end?) SA I've ever met.

Ok, even though I've vowed to shop my closet this fall, I still have my eye on a few amazing things! Some less affordable than others. I realize 90% of the list is from Anthro, but I am really loving their pieces right now. Lots of unique items you could make your own (never again want to be the girl dressing straight out of a J Crew catalog!)

Anthropologie Somerset Cape ($158)

I have been wanting a cape-style coat for some time. Even when they were 'out,' it's always seemed like such a chic top layer. I love the neutral oatmeal color too. If this doesn't work out, Anthropologie's First Chill Cape ($158) and Tulle's Cape of Good Hope ($97.99) could be good stand-ins.

J Crew Wool Pleated Silk Chimera Jacket ($258)

In my dreams! I LOVE the detailing along the front. Sadly, the price is prohibitive and I'm not even sure this would translate well into my closet. But it's pretty to look at, no?

Vince Motorcross Leather Jacket ($750)

I own 3 leather jackets. One is a hooded Mike & Chris look-alike from Old Navy, and the other two were gifts from my parents' travels through South America. The other two also have zippers and look a bit dated. This Vince number is great...edgy, but not too cropped. At over $700, this is more of an inspiration piece...I might try and rework the South American pieces or buy a motorcycle-style fake leather piece.

This might be the perfect all-season dress. As soon as I saw it, I pictured it with tall, brown chunky heels, and a long, thick oatmeal-colored cabled cardigan. It could just as easily work with some leather wedges in the summer. As soon as this goes on sale, I'm snagging it.

Yes, I am still enamored with this as the perfect chambray base layer. And yes, I think it could easily transition into fall/winter. It hasn't gone on sale yet and never appears to be available in my size.

Anthropologie Cross Your T Straps ($90)

I did pretty well buying boots last year, so I'm good for a while. These beauties are a different story. At first glance, they're not much to speak of, but every time I've seen them styled in the catalog I stop. With wide-leg jeans, all you'd see is the cognac leather and a glimpse of the stacked heel. Worn alone, they can make an outfit. And at $90, they're more reasonably priced than most of Anthro's other shoe options (yes I know $90 is still a lot to spend, but imo...with shoes, you truly do get what you pay for).

Linea Pelle Leather Topstitched Corset Belt ($198)

I don't have a light brown belt, and this season might be the one where I pull the trigger. Such a versatile color, and I love the 'corset' details. Linea Pelle's belt quality is outstanding...this piece would last forever and get better with age. Hopefully I can find a cheaper alternative or a good, deep discount.

Anthropologie Gathering Green Bag ($228)

I am always pleasantly surprised when it comes to Anthro's leather handbags. I have a cream one from a few years ago that's my go-to bag for tooling around town during spring/summer. I was unsure about this one at first (obv the greenish color grabbed me right away). The leather is soft and perfectly worn and wrinkled, but the bag itself feels quite substantial. It's a perfect fit over the shoulder as well. I only wish there was more than a simple magnetic snap closure. I have found their handbags to eventually be marked down as much as 50%, so I need to stalk this one for sure.

The blog world and fashion message boards have been going crazy over this dress for some time. I think it first appeared in Anthro's late spring catalog. Then, the bachelorette wore it. The one that chose that douchy cheater guy. Then, the look-alikes started to come.

Now, I'm a girl with a larger chest, short torso, long legs...and a hourglass shape. I have never been one to tuck in my tops, since I tend to look very top heavy. Just doesn't work. When high-waisted bottoms started popping up in stores - from high-waisted jeans to skirts - it was a trend I did not welcome. Even this dress...when I saw it the first time around, I was very meh about it, and passed up on the craze. Leave it to a decent sale to make me reconsider.

I read so many reviews on the sizing of this dress before purchasing, convinced I'd have to order it online because it would sell out in stores. Wrong. My closest Anthro, at 16th St. & 5th Ave., had all sizes, all colors. Crazy. The bestselling color appears to be the orange. It's been a hot color for summer, and appears to be popular for fall as well (and was the color worn by the bach). Me, I've never been much of an orange fan. Halloween much? Anyway, the blue really jumped out at me. It's a beautiful, vibrant, cerulean blue. It's deep enough to be taken seriously, but the dress still says fun. I tried on all colors, all sizes, just to be sure.

First things first, if you have a larger chest (I'm talking C and up), you'll probably want to size up. The S fit me, but it was definitely tighter in the chest than I was comfortable with. Surprisingly, the L fit fine...the tank part was streamlined but not tight or too loose. Unfortunately, there was a fair amount of extra material in the skirt of the L...almost appearing to be an asymmetrical hem, and quite bulky. The M was a happy medium (hard-dee-har). On me, the top of the 'skirt' falls just above my natural waist...the smallest part of my torso. It has a nice full flare, and ends just at my knees.

The tank itself is a substantial knit, which helps create a smooth shape. There is some distressing along the edges, which adds to the funk factor imo. The tank portion is sewn with blue thread (also appearing on the orange and green/striped versions). The skirt is a weighty silk, and is lined. I played around with the removable belt...it can be worn thin, thick, or swapped out.

This dress also came in a green skirted version, with a white/black striped top. It was available in-store, but appears to have sold out online. The big vertical stripes looked HORRIBLE on my larger chest, so I passed. Overall, I'm pleased with this dress...it may not transition deep into fall, but can easily pass through the remaining warmer days and cooler nights with some layering before fall really sets in.
